1999 Recreation Achievement Award

Michael Padua of Narrowsburg, NY has been fishing the waters of this region since 1968.  Five years ago, he turned his beloved hobby into a business when he became a licensed fishing guide.

Under his banner of Sweetwater Guide Service, Mike leads about 100 fishing trips a year in the Upper Delaware River, including the East and West Branches, from April through December.  Experienced and novice anglers benefit by his expertise in knowing where the trout, shad, smallmouth bass and walleye hide.

If you were out there float fishing with Mike in his custom drift boat, you'd hear him sharing with his clients his knowledge of the river's natural history and folklore.  To promote good conservation practices, Mike observes a "C.P.R." policy "Catch Photograph, and Release" whenever possible.  He follows the licensing guidelines of the National Park Service and New York State, and is a member of the Catskill Fly Center, and New York State Outdoor Guides Association.

Mike is also an enthusiastic promoter of this region, whether handing out the UDC's Visitor guides at his sportsmen show booths; helping his clients to find local accommodations, eateries, and things to do; contributing information to books and newspaper columns on fishing the Delaware Valley; or filming an episode last summer of the cable show "Adventurers in Fishing."

The Upper Delaware council is pleased to present its 1999 Recreation Achievement Award to Michael Padua.
